The Flying Pennant
I came across your web site and thought you might be interested in hearing about a project that a friend (Graham Robson) and I have been involved with.
We have had a Standard Pennant built as a race car to compete in this year's HRDC (Historic Racing Drivers Club) series which begins at Silverstone on the 5th of April with the penultimate round being the coveted St Mary's Trophy at the Goodwood Revival in September.
It has been a rollercoaster of a ride getting the car prepared with the most recent high being awarded 'Best presented Car at the Goodwood test selection day last week.
According to any history I could find,it has been 56 years since a Pennant competed in UK, so hopefully we are off with a flying start!
I have attached a couple of images, though if you think the story may be of interest to your member's,
I will happily supply more details as we have kept a running diary of the project we call 'The Flying Pennant'
Thank you for sending me this and we look forward to hearing more about your project.
Since then we have been racing the car in the HRDC Touring Greats and as the car is developed the results have improved finishing in all except one of the races entered and last time out third in class D at Rockingham. The car was leading the class most of the race until a pit lane drive through penalty!
We were totally amazed when we received a letter from Lord March inviting the car to compete in the St Mary's Trophy at this years Goodwood Revival!
The St Mary's Trophy is run in as a two part race held on the Saturday driven by a celebrity driver and on the Sunday by the owner. Sam Tordoff ,the young top ten BTCC driver, will pilot the Pennant on Saturday and Hilton Persaud on Sunday. This will be Sam's first drive in a historic car and his drive at Goodwood, Sam's grandfather Jack Tordoff the well known rally driver set his first garage Tordoff Motors(now JCT600) in Bradford in 1946 and his first dealership was Standard Motor Company.
