The Standard Triumph Marque at Shelsley Walsh

The Standard Triumph Marque day took place on 18th July 2015 at Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire. This was the Saturday of their Classic Nostalgia weekend. The Standard Motor Club would like to thank Alan Gosling for co-ordinating our club’s display. Alan lives close by and was really keen to be able to help the club with the display.

The setting at Shelsley Walsh is very lovely, with magnificent views all around, and the Standard and Triumph cars were parked in a large field. We could watch and hear the race cars motoring up the hill climb. Action on the hill consists of two one day National B events for pre-1980 cars. On each day, practice is in the morning, where all competitors are offered two practice runs. The competitive runs take place in the afternoon, with each driver having two runs. At lunch time we were treated to a really entertaining and thrilling Muscle Biplane Air Display. The pilot was Richard Goodwin in a 1960s Pitts S2S G-EWIZ biplane, which demonstrated amazing twists, turns, climbs and descents and speed.

Many people dressed in period dress which all added to the atmosphere, and there was a competition for the best vintage costumes. In the courtyard there was live music, dancing, a variety of stalls, trade stands and food and drink available - and the weather was just perfect.

Although there were only a few Standard cars attending this event everyone enjoyed the day. Club members Robert Browett and Robin Wilson came in their TR’s and Guy and Suzie Singleton were present with a trade stand. There was a great turn out of Triumphs from all the Clubs and  a really friendly atmosphere. Standard cars attending were Alan’s post war 12 DHC, a customised pre war Flying 12 and an Avon 9.

I had not visited Shelsley Walsh before but am keen to go to an event again next year.

"Classic Nostalgia produces some wonderful sights, sounds and magnificent machines from over the years, in a pretty setting amongst the wonderful Worcestershire hills." Sir Stirling Moss
