Standard 10 Van
While on the Isle of Wight for the annual charity classic car show, Phil & Lynda Homer, Dennis Brown and myself took the opportunity to check out a Standard 10 van that is currently languishing in a barn on the island.
After a drive down some very narrow lanes we arrived at the farm and were met by a lady who seemed somewhat bemused by the strange cars entering her yard. After I had introduced myself and ensured her that our intentions were honourable she kindly gave us permission to look at the vehicle which was being stored there for someone else and gave me a telephone number to contact the owner.
What we found was a sad looking van with side windows (although one window had a plate pop riveted over it). The body is now very rusty and even the roof has rotted through on one corner. The attatched photos make it look much better than it actually is. I have since spoken to the owner who told me that it has been laying in the barn for over 10 years during which time he has not even seen it. He believes that the Standard/Triumph logos were put on the van by an enthuiastic previous owner rather than the vehicle having belonged to a Standard garage. Checks have shown it to have been originally registered in Derby in 1961. I have a vague memory of having seen pictures of a similar van with the logos on many years ago but cannot remember where. The owner told me that the van would be for sale, but refused to name a price. I don't think he realises how rusty it is these days. He also told me that he has 1938 Flying 10 in rough condition for sale. I can put sreiously interested members in touch, but he will not welcome time wasters. The amount of work needed and the logistics of repatriating it to the mainland should not be under estimated, and would far outweigh the value of the finished article.
