Standard Avon 16Hp Tourers - 1933

These astonishing photographs are part of the Standard Motor Clubs extensive archives.

They were probably taken as Factory publicity shots for what at the time must have been Avon’s finest achievements. We are indeed grateful that they have survived from 1933 in this condition.

The cars are two examples of the work of French Designer, Charles Fredrick Beauvais, working his magic at the time for the New Avon Coachbuilding Co. in Warwick.

The photos are taken in the countryside not far from Avon’s works. Both cars are Coachbuilt on the Standard 16Hp six-cylinder chassis, and differ only in their colour schemes. Beauvais two tone treatmen,t with the scalloped dividing line is in my view, exquisite and the mark of a Master designer at his peak. The “Coal-Scuttle” wings, front and rear, are also a touch of genius, though possibly just a mite too heavy, so they must slightly blunt the considerable top speed. The design looks as fresh today as it did 90 years ago.

The first car, the colour of which I prefer, is light over dark, with delicate pin-lining and an “Avon” crest on the Rad cap. It also has huge headlights, probably Lucas P 100’s and sports “Ace” full cover wheeldiscs.

The lower car has dark over light paintwork, a little less effective in my view, and Avon have delved less deeply into the options list. Both cars have full weather protection and 4-seater capability, provided you are all close friends.

Both stylistically and mechanically, these cars were a “Tour de force”. So far as I know, neither of these magnificent cars survive, nor do any other of this model. I would be absolutely delighted to be proved wrong.
