December Prize Competition - Answer

We asked what this car was?

My thanks to Len Barr for the photograph

What was the Standard in the December Competition? It was a 1922 Standard Model V1.

Len Barr has provided this description of the Car:

“To confirm the identification, the car in the picture is a 1922 Standard V1 4-seater model.    This had a 1086 cc OHV engine which was rated at 8 H.P.     (The Bore and stroke was 62 x 90,  the same as the pre 1st world war Model S)     Only 500 examples of the V1 model were offered  in either two seater and dickey  or four seater coachwork, both priced at    £325.  The engine had exposed rocker gear which required lubricating with an oil can, whilst the crankshaft ran on 2 ball bearings.”

There are no known survivors of this model.

“The model was replaced in 1923 with the V2 model, which had an improved larger engine with a bore and stroke of 68 x 90 (1307 cc) which was rated at 11.4 H.P.      Visually the V2 model looks very similar with the same 4-stud disc wheels, but you can tell the two models apart, as on the V2 model, the line of the bonnet against the bulkhead goes straight down vertical, instead of slanting to the rear.    1000 examples of the larger engined, V2 model were built of which there is one example, with a four seater bodywork surviving, which is being restored in Suffolk for an owner that lives in Vienna

The dimensions of the V1 and V2 are the same with a wheelbase of 8 ft 9 in, a Track of 4 ft and Ground Clearance of 8 3/4 in.”

The Winner, drawn on Jan 1st was Member 8244 Ian Clapham - and he wins the prize of a £20 voucher to spend in the Club’s WebShop.
