The Standard Jungle Bug – The First All-Terrain Vehicle?

This feature is the 1944 Standard “Jungle Bug”.

Phil Homer describes a compact Military vehicle that looks, for all the world, like what would be described today as an All-Terrain Vehicle, ATV, or Quad Bike. But that title was not claimed at the time. Honda claims to have invented the genre but not until the mid 1970’s. The features of the Jungle Bug were very advanced, but it is a shame they would not be recognised for another 30 years!

When Honda invented the Quad Bike around 1975 it was hailed as a breakthrough.

It was a rapid, lightweight, single-seater with 4-wheel drive and with low-pressure tyres which allowed it to cope with wet or swampy ground. Well then, very much like the Jungle bug, but with the added bonus that the Bug was already able to carry 3 additional passengers.
